Patron Saint Festivities of Rute.

Since the early 17th century, the celebrations in honor of the Virgin of Carmen have been taking place on August 15th.

During those years, the Brotherhood organized religious celebrations, consisting of a novena in the days leading up to the festival and the function held on the 15th, for which preachers were already brought in from outside the locality. After the function, the image of Our Lady of Carmen was processed, accompanied by music behind and by a dance or a chirigota, depending on the years, in front.

Currently, the festivities organized by the Archconfraternity of Our Lady of Carmen, the Patroness of Rute, in honor of its titular throughout the year, are structured as follows:

It begins on February 13th, on the occasion of the anniversary of the proclamation of Our Lady of Carmen as the Patroness of Rute by Pope Pius XI. A solemn religious function is held in her hermitage, preceded by the recitation of the Holy Rosary, which also serves as the official presentation of the Major Brothers of the Patron Saint Festivities of the current year, as well as the Queen and Ladies of honor of the same.

During the Saturdays of the month of July, starting at midnight, the Brothers of the Aurora, leaving from the door of the Hermitage of Our Lady of Carmen, roam the streets of Rute singing the typical songs collected in the Songbook of Our Lady of Carmen, Patroness of Rute.

Generally, on the second Sunday of August, starting at 7 in the morning, the Rosary of the Aurora takes place, departing from the parish of Sta. Catalina, where the Sacred image of Our Patroness is already located, after the processional transfer from her hermitage.

On July 14th, 15th, and 16th, a triduum is celebrated in her hermitage, culminating on July 16th, the feast day of Our Patroness, with a pious homage to Our Mother, in which the entire town participates. On the same day, between eight and nine in the evening, the Municipal Band of Music of Rute takes a route through the main streets of the town, concluding at the door of the Hermitage with the performance of the Marine Salve and the Hymn of Our Patroness.

On the last Sunday of July, the processional transfer of Our Patroness takes place from her hermitage, traversing all the streets of her neighborhood to the Parish of Sta. Catalina, where the religious events will continue. Between August 5th and 13th, starting at nine in the evening and in the Parish of Santa Catalina, the novena in honor of Our Lady of Carmen, Patroness of Rute, is celebrated. Between August 8th and 14th, in the Paseo-Parque de Ntra. Sra. Del Carmen, various ludic-cultural events are organized by the Honorable City Council of Rute. On August 14th, at the Parish of Santa Catalina, the coronation of the Queen of the festivities takes place, along with the imposition of sashes on her Ladies of honor, followed by the proclamation of the Patron Saint Festivities.

All the events organized in honor of our Patroness culminate on August 15th, the great day of Rute par excellence. At eleven in the morning, a Solemn Religious Function concelebrated takes place in the Parish of Sta. Catalina, which, as has been traditional for some years now, is sung by the Coral de Ntra. Sra. Del Carmen Coronada, from Jerez.

Between twelve and two in the afternoon, various activities for the little ones take place, starting with a parade of giants and big heads and many other attractions in the Paseo-Parque de Ntra. Sra. Del Carmen. All these events have their climax with the processional departure of Our Lady of Carmen, Patroness of Rute, at nine at night from the Parish of Sta. Catalina, to traverse the streets of her town.

Around midnight, our Patroness makes her entrance into the Paseo-Parque, where a beautiful pyromusical spectacle is offered to her. Around one in the morning, in the Plaza de Ntra. Sra. Del Carmen, the bands accompanying her during the procession offer a concert to our Patroness, continuing immediately to her Hermitage, where around two in the morning, she will make her triumphant entrance amid a shower of fireworks.
